Thirteen Departments at NKUA rank among the top globally in Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects

In late 2024, Shanghai Jiao Tong University published the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, i.e., its 2024 ranking of world Universities in specific subject disciplines across five broad fields. This Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, also referred to by the general public as the Shanghai List, has again this year brought exceptional results for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

More specifically, our Institution for 2024 has 15 occurrences in the top Universities of each academic subject out of a total of fifty-five (55) subjects. These 15 academic subjects effectively correspond to 13 Departments of our Institution (see Table 1).

The following data are particularly worth mentioning:

  • In Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Department of Pharmacy climbed to places 51-75 globally in 2024, up from the 201-300 bracket in 2023.
  • For the fifth time since 2017, the School of Dentistry made it to the top 100 Universities in the world, ranking 76-100 in Dentistry & Oral Sciences.
  • In Clinical Medicine and Public Health, our Institution’s School of Medicine found itself among the top 150 Medical Schools in the world. At the same time, in Medical Technology, it ranked in the 201-300 bracket, an increase of 100 places compared to the previous year. With these outstanding results our School of Medicine now ranks first among all Greek and Cypriot Universities with Medical Schools.
  • In Atmospheric Science, the Department of Physics jumped 200 places from last year’s 301-400 bracket to places 151-200 worldwide. At the same time, the Department ranked in the 201-300 bracket in Physics.
  • NKUA’s Educational Studies, offered mainly by three Departments at our University (Department of Pedagogy and Primary Education, Department of Early Childhood Education, Department of Educational Studies), likewise had a 200-place rise in a single year. More precisely, NKUA ranked in the 201-300 bracket in Education for 2024, up from the 401-500 bracket in the same academic subject in 2023.
  • The Departments of Informatics and Telecommunications, Digital Industry Technologies, and Aerospace Science and Technology all produced very remarkable results, which helped our University stay in places 101-150 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Additionally, NKUA ranked 151-200 in Telecommunication Engineering, while, for the first time, our Institution appeared in the top 400 Universities worldwide in Computer Science & Engineering.
  • The Department of Biology has again distinguished itself in two academic subjects, placing 201-300 in Biological Sciences and Human Biological Sciences.
  • The Department of Psychology—for the third consecutive year among the best in the world—ranked in the 401-500 bracket in Psychology. Notably, it is the only Department of Psychology at any Greek University included in Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
  • The Department of Geology and Geoenvironment found itself among the top 500 Universities in the world in Earth Sciences.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
