Professor Panagiotis J. Papagelopoulos, Director of the 1st Clinical Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA); Professor George Babis, Director of the 2nd Clinical Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NKUA; and Assistant Professor Panayiotis D. Megaloikonomos, also of the 1st Clinical Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NKUA, actively participated in formulating the new international guidelines for orthopaedic infections during the 3rd International Consensus Meeting on Infection (2025 ICM), held from 8 to 10 May 2025 in Istanbul, Türkiye.
In the past 18 months, over 1,200 top-tier experts—personally invited from across the globe—including orthopaedic surgeons, infectious disease physicians, microbiologists, and other scientists worked intensively on 366 topics concerning orthopaedic infections. Coordinating the event were the internationally renowned Professors of Orthopaedics Javad Parvizi (USA) and Thorsten Gehrke (Germany). The conclusions were thoroughly discussed and adopted by vote during the International Consensus Meeting of Istanbul. The findings of this global scientific effort will appear soon in prestigious academic journals.
