The Meyer-Struckmann-Preis of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, awarded in 2026 for research on the topic of Institutional Resilience, will this year be presented to Chrysostomos Mantzavinos.
The Meyer-Struckmann Prize
Since 2006, the Meyer-Struckmann Foundation has awarded its annual prize for research in the humanities and social sciences. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) announces the Meyer-Struckmann-Preis, which carries a monetary award of €20,000 and is presented each year on a different theme.
The Meyer-Struckmann-Preis is presented at a formal ceremony by the Chair of the Meyer-Struckmann Foundation and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.
“With this award, the Meyer-Struckmann Foundation recognizes Chrysostomos Mantzavinos’s outstanding contributions to the study of institutions and their significance for processes of social and scientific development. Through his theory-driven yet simultaneously application-oriented perspective, Mantzavinos demonstrates how institutional structures enable social and political stability, while also remaining flexible themselves in responding to processes of social change and adapting to new challenges.”
Prof. Dr. Dr. Chrysostomos Mantzavinos
C. Mantzavinos is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Athens. He is a full member of the Academia Europaea – The Academy of Europe, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences (AIPS). He is also Correspondant Étranger at the Centre de Philosophie Contemporaine at the Sorbonne.
Chrysostomos Mantzavinos is the author of Wettbewerbstheorie (Berlin, 1994), Individuals, Institutions, and Markets (Cambridge University Press, 2001), Naturalistic Hermeneutics (Cambridge University Press, 2005), Explanatory Pluralism (Cambridge University Press, 2016), A Dialogue on Explanation (Springer, 2018), A Dialogue on Institutions (Springer, 2021), and The Constitution of Science (Cambridge University Press, 2024). He is also the editor of Philosophy of the Social Sciences (Cambridge University Press, 2009).
Before taking up his current position in Athens, he held the Chair of Economics and Philosophy at Witten/Herdecke University (2004–2011). He has also taught at the universities of Freiburg and Bayreuth and at Stanford University, and was a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn.
He was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University on two occasions and at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris, also on two occasions, and a Visiting Fellow at the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University.
Mantzavinos was also a Fellow at THE NEW INSTITUTE in Hamburg and a Mercator Fellow at the DFG Research Training Group “The Ethics and Epistemology of Science” at Bielefeld University and Leibniz University Hannover (2020–2024). He has also taught at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.
He holds two doctoral degrees, in Economics and Philosophy, both from the University of Tübingen.
