Emeritus Professor of Medicine–Hypertension George Stergiou, from the Hypertension Centre STRIDE-7, Third Department of Medicine of the NKUA at “Sotiria” Hospital, President of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) for 2024–2026, chaired the 2026 ISH Congress in Dubai, 22–25 October 2026, with 2,200 participants from 83 countries.
Two major international ISH initiatives were presented at the Congress:
New 2026 ISH Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines, with greater emphasis on standardised blood pressure measurement and evaluation, recommendation for earlier initiation of pharmacological treatment in people with persistent blood pressure ≥130/80 mmHg (under OPTIMAL care recommendations), and emphasis on combination therapy, treatment adherence and timely treatment intensification. ISH OnTheGo, a novel AI-powered web tool, providing healthcare professionals with rapid, user-friendly, access to recommendations of the new guidelines via a mobile phone or computer, aiming to facilitate their implementation in everyday clinical practice and support better hypertension care worldwide.
