The EU-funded OASSES (Open Autonomous programmable cloud apps & smart EdgE Sensors) research project with a total budget of 8 million euros and a three-year duration, got started on 1/1/2023. The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is participating in the consortium through the Department of Ports Management and Shipping, with the research team led by Associate Professor Panagiotis Trakadas. The research team is complemented with the participation of Faculty Members belonging to the General Department as well as to the Department of Digital Industry Technologies.

The main goal of OASSES research project is based on creating an open, decentralized, intelligent, programable edge framework for swarm architectures and applications as so far the massive increase in device connectivity has resulted in the exploitation of data in many ways. Creating a common and standardized architectural frame for the technologies that mentioned above is an important research challenge.

In this context, the successful implementation of the OASSES project, which relies on the cooperation of twenty-one (21) European partners (research institutions, universities, companies), is about to provide open tools in many fields, with a completely decentralized approach, based on examples such as human-in-the-loop (HITL) a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). In particular, the research team of the Department of Ports Management and Shipping has undertaken the responsibility to investigate and evaluate the benefits that will arise from the integration of the new programming environment and swarms of surface and underwater vessels in ports and maritime.

The research team of NKUA will actively contribute to the implementation of the solutions proposed by the project, at the same time giving the possibility of supporting doctoral positions to young researchers.

In the final stage of the project, OASSES targets the implementation of a portable, privacy preserving ID federation system, for edge devices and services, with full compliance and compatibility to GAIA-X federation and IDSA trust directives and specifications.
