With great pleasure, we announce that Professor Antonios Chatzigeorgiou, Endocrinologist and Professor of Experimental and Clinical Physiology at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), has received the Basic/Translational Science Award of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI), which is presented to outstanding scientists up to 45 years of age.
The recipient of the award is selected based on the quality of his / her publication record over the previous ten years. The research should demonstrate clear relevance to the understanding, diagnosis, or treatment of human disease, and a significant portion of the work must have been conducted in Europe. The selection is made by the ESCI Council, with primary emphasis on the candidate’s ten most important first- or last-author original research publications and their contribution to advancing the understanding of human disease.
Founded in 1967, the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI) is a pan-European scientific society dedicated to advancing research into the mechanisms underlying human disease. It brings together clinicians and basic scientists from across Europe and beyond, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and providing a forum for scientific exchange, discussion, and innovation in clinical investigation. The Society adopts a broad definition of “clinical investigation,” encompassing research from basic laboratory discoveries through to clinical application.
The award was presented to Professor Chatzigeorgiou during the 60th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation, held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 3 to 5 June 2026.
