The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has once again ranked first among Greek universities both in the total number of newly admitted students and in the number of candidates who selected it as their first choice, according to an analysis of admissions data for 2026–2027.
Based on the available figures, a total of 5,586 students have secured places at the University of Athens through the various admission categories. This is the highest number of new entrants recorded at any Greek higher education institution.
Across the 23 Greek universities included in the analysis, 61,614 students have been admitted. Nearly one in ten of them will study at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. This figure is likely to increase further through the student transfer process in the coming months, with the University of Athens remaining the preferred destination for most transfer applicants.
The University’s leading position is reflected not only in the overall number of incoming students but also in the number of candidates who place one of its Schools or Departments at the top of their preference list. With a broad academic offering spanning the humanities and social sciences, the natural sciences, computer science, education, economics and the health sciences, the University continues to attract outstanding students across every major field of study. Once again, its Schools and Departments – including Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Psychology and programmes across the natural sciences, the humanities and the social sciences – have proved among the most competitive and sought-after in the country.
These results reflect both the scale of the University and the breadth and strength of its academic profile, while reaffirming the enduring confidence that Greek society places in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. As Greece’s oldest and largest university, it continues to serve as a national benchmark for higher education, research and scientific excellence.
