Eleven Greek academics from Greek Tertiary Institutions on the ‘Highly Cited Researcher’ table of Clarivate

Eleven Greek academics and researchers from Greek Tertiary Institutions and Research Centres are on the list of the 6,938 scientists with substantial influence globally over the last 11 years. The list, entitled ‘Highly Cited Researchers’, is compiled by the internationally renowned Clarivate and is based on data from the Web of Science research database. There were approximately 7,200 highly cited researcher designations for 2022—some 4,000 in 21 specific fields and about 3,200 for cross-field performance.

To analyse and select highly cited researchers, Clarivate retrieves data from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), 2011-2021, a database that surveys approximately 179,000 papers of high impact and influence, i.e., those that make it in the top 1% by total citations for their year of publication. A second criterion for designations is total citation count in a field that ranks a researcher in the top 1% by citations in this specific field. Younger researchers are more likely to emerge in such an analysis than in one dependent on total citations over many years, the latter favouring senior researchers who, by definition, have a larger volume of research work due to years of activity.

According to Clarivate, out of the approximately 9,000,000 researchers active worldwide, a list of the top 6,938 researchers whose work is significant as per specific indicators and is also a source for other researchers is compiled.

Table 1 summarizes the eleven Greek academics and researchers who work in Greek Tertiary Institutions and Research Centres and have a significant global research influence according to the ranking. For each of them, the table displays the total number of publications, the total number of citations, and the h-index as derive from the data available in the Web of Science database.

At the top of the list of Greek academics and researchers appears Mr Meletios-Athanasios Dimopoulos, Professor and Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with 2,358 publications and 88,632 citations. Mr Gerasimos Filippatos, again a Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, comes in second place, with 749 publications and 84,500 citations. In third place, we find Mr Constantinos Stoumpos, Associate Professor at the University of Crete, with 186 publications and 31,149 citations. The top 5 is rounded off by Mr George Karagiannidis, Professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with 578 publications and 18,155 citations, in fourth place, and Mr Nikos Karamanos, Professor at the University of Patras, with 376 publications and 12,294 citations, in fifth place.

As seen from the table above, three researchers are affiliated with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The rest are affiliated with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Crete, the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Thessaly, the Agricultural University of Athens, the University of Patras, the International Hellenic University, and the Athena Research Centre.

David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate, said: ‘Research fuels the race for knowledge, and it is important that Nations and Institutions celebrate the individuals who drive the wheel of innovation. The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates, among others, three exceptional individual researchers at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens who are having a significant impact and influence on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers. These individuals, and all the others included in the table, are helping to transform human ingenuity into our world’s greatest breakthroughs—and it is an honour to celebrate their achievements.’

For 2022 Clarivate announced 7,225 Highly Cited Researcher designations issued to 6,938 individuals. The number of designations exceeded individuals because some researchers received recognition in more than one Essential Science Indicators (ESI) field.

This year Clarivate cooperated with Retraction Watch and expanded the qualitative analysis of the Highly Cited Researchers list to address increasing concerns over potential misconduct (such as plagiarism, image manipulation, and fake peer review). With the assistance of Retraction Watch and its unparalleled database of retractions, Clarivate analysts searched for evidence and indications of misconduct in all publications of those on the preliminary list of Highly Cited Researchers.

Inclusion in this table is a distinction also reflected in the Institutions of origin of the highly cited researchers. At the same time, it once again highlights the outstanding human potential of our Universities and Research Centres.

University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which was inaugurated on May 3, 1837, was initially housed in a renovated Ottoman building on the northeastern side of the Acropolis. This building has since been restored and now functions as the University Museum. Originally named the "Othonian University," after Otto, the first king of Greece, it consisted of four academic departments and 52 students. As the first university of the newly established Greek state, as well as of the broader Balkan and Mediterranean region, it assumed an important socio-historical role, which was pivotal in the development of specific forms of knowledge and culture within the country.
